TORONTO -- Andrea Bargnanis first game at the Air Canada Centre as a visitor wasnt one he will particularly care to remember, but it could have been a lot worse. DeMar DeRozan scored twenty points on Friday as the Toronto Raptors beat the New York Knicks 100-91 in pre-season action. Bargnani scored 10 points in 22 minutes of play and received a tepid reception from the Toronto crowd. A particularly disgruntled fan yelled out, "You suck, Bargnani," in between the American and Canadian anthems, but the 27-year-old didnt seem to take the boos to heart. "The fans have the right to do whatever they feel they want to do," Bargnani said after the game. "We had some good years, we had some bad years. a The only thing I have to say about the fans in Toronto is that I was lucky to play here for seven years." The booing from the half-filled arena wasnt as bad as expected. "It was actually not that bad," Amir Johnson said. "I heard some cheers, I heard a little bit of boos awe always had great battles in practice just going back and forth. He looked pretty good out there. I just wish the best for him." The seven-foot, 256-pound Bargnani was drafted first overall by Toronto in 2006, and went on to average 15.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game over seven seasons with the team. The Raptors tried to push Bargnani as the face of the franchise during his seven-year tenure with the organization, but fans failed to embrace him as the team had hoped. Shortly after DeRozan was drafted ninth overall in 2009, the shift to market DeRozan as the new face of the future began. Four years later, with Rudy Gay at DeRozans side, the two hope to be the one-two punch needed to help the Raptors end a five-year playoff drought. "Hes been here a long time," DeRozan said of his former teammate. "Way before I was here. Sometimes you just need a new home. A new place to start over and regroup and figure out a new identity." Through three pre-season games, DeRozan is turning heads. The fifth-year swingman continued his strong showing with a 15-point first half, on 7-for-15 shooting from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Torontos coaching staff has stressed attacking the basket to DeRozan. "I was eighth or whatever it was in free throws in the league (last season)," he said. "My goal is to try to get into the top five of free throws and that comes with being aggressive." Carmelo Anthony led New York with a game-high 24 points and added eight rebounds. The Knicks took a four-point lead into the fourth quarter after three tight quarters of basketball. After playing his starters throughout the first half, Raptors coach Dwane Casey elected to go with his reserves in the final frame. Quincy Acy got into the game for his first minutes of action this season and the move paid off. Acy and fellow sophomore Terrence Ross combined to provide late-game heroics by reeling off their own 11-0 run to lead the Raptors to victory. "Quincy Acy got our attention, the coaching staffs attention," Casey said. "We knew what he could do, hes working his behind off. Theres nothing free, you get an opportunity to go in and play, you take advantage of it. When your numbers called, its an opportunity to go in there and do something and play and produce and he did that." The Raptors next head to Minnesota to face the Timberwolves on Saturday night. They open the regular season at home against the Celtics on Oct. 30. Kyle Gibson Jersey . According the CSNBayArea.com, the 31-year-old suffered an ACL injury in his right knee on Friday when he collided with Anaheims Emerson Etem during a pre-season game. Minnesota Twins Store . Lowry and the Raptors officially announced a four-year US$48 million dollar deal Thursday. The deal was reported last week but couldnt be made official until Thursday, when the moratorium on signings was lifted. "They were real factors. Yet public reaction to his possible return to the nations favourite sport is becoming more and more vehement. The high-profile case raises questions about the role of rehabilitation and challenges conventional wisdom that a convicted criminal who has paid for his offence should be given a chance to work. The situation is complicated by Evans lack of remorse — he insists he is innocent and has never apologized.Oldham, an English team that plays in the countrys third-tier League One, is considering signing Evans but major sponsors Verlin and Mecca Bingo said Monday they will drop the team if he joins. Thousands have signed an online petition opposing his return.I agree hes served his time but its a very serious crime, said Kath Woodward, a professor of sociology at Britains Open University who deals extensively with sports issues. Remorse would go some way toward ameliorating the situation. Its very disappointing that clubs like Oldham are trying to get a reasonable player cheap. It shows the management of football (soccer) doesnt understand the changing times. She said societys attitudes toward rape and sexual harassment have hardened considerably since the days when former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson was able to resume his boxing career after serving time in prison for a 1992 rape.I can remember the idea you just have to put up with it, its part of life, but women now are not prepared to do that, she said. Theres a lot of public feeling against him coming back, a lot of public protests. The fans genuinely dont want it.Oldhams chief executive, Neil Joy, said Monday that discussions were continuing with soccer authorities on the topic but the club was not ready to make any official announcement concerning a possible pact with Evans. There have not been any high-profile cases of convicted rapists returning to professional team sports in the United States. However, some professional athletes in the U.S. have been able to resume their careers after prison sentences, including NFL quarterbackk Michael Vick, who served time for his role in a dogfighting ring.ddddddddddddEvans was jailed for five years in 2012 but was released in October after serving half his sentence. The former Wales national team player said he would work to clear his name and that he wanted to return to soccer.Sheffield United said in November that Evans would train with the club, sparking almost immediate opposition. Prominent Britons, including Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis, said they would drop their association with the club if they signed Evans. The pressure worked — the club changed course after 10 days and said Evans would not be training there after all. After that, the prospect that Evans could play overseas was raised when a Maltese team said it would offer him a contract. But British officials said since Evans was a convicted sex offender this would likely be impossible. A Ministry of Justice statement said probation officers would have to approve any new job and would have to be assured of regular, face-to-face meetings, which effectively rules out working abroad. Then Oldham entered the picture. But resistance has been fierce, with some 20,000 people signing an online petition opposing his addition.Greater Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd even took the unusual step of wading into the controversy. He said Evans lack of remorse and failure to acknowledge his crime should keep him out of the game.Ched Evans is a convicted rapist and, whilst I strongly believe in the principle of rehabilitation, it will send out entirely the wrong message if they offer him a contract, Lloyd said.Professor Simon Chadwick, who specializes in sports marketing at Coventry University, said Evans has become a toxic player that nobody wants to touch.Chadwick said Evans made the situation worse by presenting his case to the public in an arrogant way that does not seem to comprehend the severity of his crime.Nobody wants to see somebody who has perpetrated violent crime against women be so easily allowed back in, he said. Normally youd say, if he served his time, he should have the opportunity to re-enter the workplace and continue his work. But this is not a legal issue, its a socio-cultural issue. What this man has done is deemed by many to be unacceptable. ' ' '
