TAMPA, Fla. -- Outfielder Brett Gardner and the New York Yankees have agreed to a contract that adds $52 million in guaranteed money from 2015-18. The deal announced Sunday includes a team option for for 2019 that if exercised would make the new money $62.5 million over five seasons. "It shows the level of confidence, belief and trust, and the type of player and person he is," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "Were excited to know that hes going to be a part of this team going forward. Were a better team with Gardy on it, thats the bottom line. This is a good day for him, and we believe it makes the future for us better." Gardner agreed last month to a $5.6 million, one-year contract and would have been eligible for free agency after the 2014 season. The new deal adds a $2 million signing bonus payable next January and salaries of $12 million in 2015, $13 million in 2016, $12 million in 2017 and $11 million in 2018. The Yankees have a $12.5 million option for 2019 with a $2 million buyout. Gardner would receive an additional $1 million payment if hes traded, a provision he can earn only once. "Free agency is something that, it kind of intrigued me, but it also kind of scared me," Gardner said. "Ive never been anywhere else. I love it here. I love putting on the pinstripes everyday." Cashman said talks about the contract started at the winter meetings in December. The Yankees are moving Gardner to left field this year after signing free agent centre fielder Jacoby Ellsbury to a $153 million, seven-year contract in December. Gardner did have questions in his mind about his Yankees future after the Ellsbury acquisition. "When they signed Jacoby, your name gets thrown out in the trade rumours and all that," Gardner said. "Its kind of annoying, really. I didnt want to get traded. I dont want to go anywhere else, and I let them know that." The 30-year-old Gardner hit .273 last year with eight home runs, 52 RBIs and 24 stolen bases. "I like what he brings," Cashman said. "The speed dynamic, the defence, and I think the offence is there as well." Also, the Yankees agreed to a minor league contract with injured closer Andrew Bailey, who was with Boston last year and is coming back from right shoulder surgery last July. Cashman said the right-hander might be able to join the team in August or September. "When he is healthy, hes an exceptional reliever," Cashman said. "Hes coming off of a shoulder surgery, so were taking a flier. A low risk. If we can get a reward out of it, great. If not, its one of those nothing ventured, nothing gained." NOTES: Yankees manager Joe Girardi attended a meeting with MLB officials Joe Torre and Tony La Russa Saturday on topics including instant replay. Girardi said the Yankees first instant replay test game will be March 6 against Philadelphia in Clearwater. "It opens up us to more to have to answer for, but I think it gives our game the opportunity to have more things decided on the field, which I think is a good thing," Girardi said. The Yankees plan to work on replay situations throughout spring training even if its not a test game. "Well probably practice with walkie talkies," Girardi said. ... Starting the third round of the HSBC Champions with a five-shot lead, he blasted his way to 10 birdies and was running away from the field. As for the other two holes, it was a reminder that no lead is safe in his hands. All those birdies were offset by two double bogeys, the last one cutting his lead in half going into the final round of this World Golf Championship. About the only thing that cheered him up Saturday afternoon was a 6-under 66 for a three-shot lead over Ian Poulter. "Its a good score," Johnson said. "Im definitely happy with what I shot. Im just not happy with the way I finished. Making two doubles, theres no excuse for that, especially the way Im playing right now." Johnson ran off five straight birdies to close out a 30 on the front nine of Sheshan International and a five-shot lead over Poulter. For his next trick, the 29-year-old American hit wedge four times from inside 100 yards before he could get the ball on the green at the 10th hole. He had to make a 12-foot putt for double bogey. He followed with another run of four straight birdies, hitting a 5-iron into 15 feet for a two-putt birdie on the par-5 14th, and a 3-iron to the front of the 16th green for a chip-and-putt birdie that stretched his lead to six shots. Everything changed in the final half-hour of a soft, gentle day for scoring in Shanghai. Poulter, who shot 30 on the front nine without making birdie on either of the par 5s, closed with a birdie on the par-5 18th for a 63. He thought that was a good day of work, even though he wasnt making up any ground on Johnson. "This golf course gives up a lot of birdies, and hes a good player," Poulter said. "And in this form, hes going to make a lot of birdies. I just need to do my thing tomorrow and make a lot more than what he does. Im going to have to see what happens coming down the stretch." Poulter was talking about Sunday afternoon. He didnt realize he would be getting some help on Saturday. Johnsons tee shot sailed to the right and into the middle of the lake on the 18th. It appeared that he could have dropped further up the fairway, but playing partners Boo Weekley and Bubba Watson didnt offer much help as to where (or if) the shot ever crossed land before it entered the hazard. Not wanting to take any chance, Johnson opted to return to the tee. He ripped another drive down the edge of the water, this time with his draw to reach the fairway.dddddddddddd But his approach went left near the lip of a bunker, and he did well to blast out to 15 feet and take two putts for his 7. Johnson was at 18-under 198 and will be in the final group with Poulter and Graeme McDowell, who had a 64 and was four shots behind. Rory McIlroy birdied three of his last five holes for a 67 and was six shots behind, along with Graham DeLaet and U.S. Open champion Justin Rose, who each had a 65. They still had an outside chance, though so much of that depends on Johnson and how to he responds to his pair of double bogeys. "Im still a little mad from my double bogey on 18," Johnson said. "Obviously, to have a three-shot lead going into the last day is good and Im looking forward to the challenge. I still have to play really well. The guys that are right behind me, theyre playing very well, too. So its still going to be a tough day tomorrow. Got to come out and make a lot of birdies." That wasnt the problem -- for Johnson and most everyone else. Martin Kaymer, who won the HSBC Champions two years ago by tying the course record with a 63 in the final round, went one better. The German started with six birdies in seven holes and thought briefly about a 59 with three straight birdies on the front nine that put him at 10-under with three to play. He missed an 8-foot birdie on No. 7, failed to birdie the par-5 eighth and had to settle for a course record 62. Kaymer was eight shots behind. "Ive shot 59 before and I thought, Theres a chance, especially after my birdies on 4, 5, 6," Kaymer said. "But you cant make them all." McDowell was six shots out of the lead when he finished and it looked as though he might lose ground to Johnson. Even so, McDowell has a lot at stake on Sunday at No. 2 on the European Tour money list, and he could move past Henrik Stenson in the Race to Dubai if he were to finish alone in second. "From here, it looks like Dustin is going to have to beat himself for anybody to have a chance to catch him," McDowell said. "Race to Dubai points will be very important to me. I have a lot to play for tomorrow. If not the trophy, second place will certainly be worth my while." And then, the trophy became a little more realistic. "I have to do my thing tomorrow," Poulter said. "Its only Saturday. You cant win tournaments on Saturday. Its all about playing well on Sunday." ' ' '
SAN FRANCISCO -- Anger, frustration and calls for action echoed around the NBA on Saturday after an audio recording surfaced of a man identified as Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling telling his girlfriend not to bring black people to games. Everybody except for the embattled Clippers owner, who has a decades-long history of alleged discrimination and offensive behaviour, seemed to have a response. The league said it was investigating the recording posted on TMZs website, calling the comments "disturbing and offensive." President Barack Obama, asked to respond at a news conference with Malaysias prime minister during Obamas visit to the country Sunday, called the reported remarks "incredibly offensive racist statements." "I dont think I have to interpret those statements for you, they kind of speak for themselves," Obama said. "When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you dont really have to do anything. You just let them talk. And thats what happened here." Obama also expressed confidence the NBA would address the situation, and said the United States still wrestles with "the legacy of race and slavery and segregation." "Obviously, the NBA is a league that is beloved by fans all across the country," Obama said. "Its got an awful lot of African-American players. Its steeped in African-American culture. And, I suspect that the NBA is going to be deeply concerned in resolving this." Lakers Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, a target of Sterlings remarks, said he wouldnt attend Clippers games as long as Sterling was the owner. Miami Heat star LeBron James asked new NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to take aggressive measures, saying "there is no room for Donald Sterling in our league." "Obviously, if the reports are true, its unacceptable in our league," James said. "It doesnt matter, white, black or Hispanic -- all across the races its unacceptable. As the commissioner of our league, they have to make a stand. They have to be very aggressive with it. I dont know what it will be, but we cant have that in our league." Silver spoke Saturday night in Memphis, Tenn., before the Grizzlies game against Oklahoma City, repeating that the league finds the audio tape "disturbing and offensive" and that Sterling agreed to not attend the Clippers game Sunday at Golden State. "All members of the NBA family should be afforded due process and a fair opportunity to present their side of any controversy, which is why Im not yet prepared to discuss any potential sanctions against Donald Sterling," Silver said. "We will, however, move extraordinarily quickly in our investigation." Silver said the NBA needs to confirm authenticity of the audio tape and interview both Sterling and the woman in the recording. The Clippers will be back in Los Angeles for Game 5 on Tuesday night. "We do hope to have this wrapped up in the next few days," Silver said. Clippers coach Doc Rivers said players discussed boycotting Game 4 of their first-round playoff series during a 45-minute team meeting but quickly decided against it. "I think the biggest statement we can make as men, not as black men, as men, is to stick together and show how strong we are as a group," Rivers said. "Not splinter. Not walk. Its easy to protest. The protest will be in our play." Clippers President Andy Roeser said in a statement that the team did not know if the tape is legitimate or has been altered. He said the woman on the tape, identified by TMZ as V. Stiviano, "is the defendant in a lawsuit brought by the Sterling family alleging that she embezzled more than $1.8 million, who told Mr. Sterling that she would get even." Roeser also said the recording does not reflect Sterlings beliefs. He added that Sterling is "upset and apologizes for sentiments attributed to him" about Johnson, whom he called Sterlings friend. In the recording posted on TMZ, the man questions his girlfriends association with minorities. TMZ reported Stiviano, who is of black and Mexican descent, posted a picture of herself with Johnson on Instagram -- which has since been removed. The man asked Stiviano not to broadcast her association with black people or bring black people to games. The man specifically mentioned Johnson on the recording, saying "dont bring him to my games, OK?" "I will never go to a Clippers game again as long as Donald Sterling is the owner," Johnson responded on Twitter. He also said the alleged comments are "a black eye for the NBA" and said he felt bad that friends such as Rivers and Clippers point guard Chris Paul had to work for Sterling. Paul released a statement through the players union that said "this is a very serious issue which we will address aggressively." He also said Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, a former NBA All-Star guard who is the chairman of a search committee to find a new director for the union, would take a leading role to help players address the matter. Paul and Clippers All-Star forward Blake Griffin declined further comment on the issue after the teams practice at the University of San Francisco. Other players were not made available as Rivers said he would speak for the team. "A lot of guys voiced their opinions. None of them were happy about it," Rivers said. "This was a situation where were trying to go after something very important for us, something that weve all dreamed about all our childhoods. Donald or anyone else had nothing to do with that dream, and were not going to let anything get in the way of those dreams." On TNTs halftime studio show Saturday, host Charles Barkley said "this is the first test of Adam Silver." He said Silver had to "suspend him and fine him immediately." In Dallas, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said "I have plenty of opinions, just not going to share them. He fended off several inquiries before saying: "Obviously, if any business or entrepreneur says or does things that arent congruent with what the organization is trying to convey, thats a problem. But its not my problem." Warriors coach Mark Jackson, who played for the Clippers from 1992-94, said of Sterlings comments: "My feeling would be the same, no matter if I was coaching, playing or a fan. Theres no place for it." Jacky Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Rev. Al Sharptons National Action Network, said the organization planned a protest outside Game 5 of the Clippers-Warriors series Tuesday night in Los Angeles. Sterling, a real estate owner, bought the Clippers in 1981. He is the longest-tenured owner in the NBA since Lakers owner Jerry Buss died last year. Sterling has been frequently criticized for his frugal operation of the Clippers, although in recent years he has spent heavily to add stars such as Paul and Rivers, who is in his first year as coach. Sterling also has been involved in several lawsuits over the years, including ones with accusations of discrimination. In November 2009, Sterling agreed to pay $2.73 million to settle allegations by the government that he refused to rent apartments to Hispanics and blacks and to families with children. The Justice Department sued Sterling in August 2006 for allegations of housing discrimination in the Koreatown area of Los Angeles. In March 2011, Sterling won a lawsuit against former Clippers general manager Elgin Baylor when a jury rejected the Hall of Famers claim of age discrimination and harassment. Baylor, who was 76 at the time, had sought about $2 million after claiming he was forced out of the job he had held for 22 years. The team said Baylor left on his own and a jury awarded him nothing. Sterling is a courtside fixture at Clippers home games. But he rarely visits the teams locker room at Staples Center, although he made an appearance in December 2012 after the Clippers won their 11th straight game, when he led an awkward locker room cheer. Ames, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of nationally-ranked Big 12 Conference teams coming off a loss get together on Monday night, as the Texas Longhorns pay a visit to the Iowa State Cyclones. Texas had been considered a viable challenger to perennial Big 12 power Kansas during the first month and a half of the season, but the start of conference play has certainly humbled the Horns. Coach Rick Barnes squad is 14-5 overall, but is just 3-3 against league foes. Texas suffered a 75-62 setback to the 11th-ranked Jayhawks at home on Saturday in its most recent outing. Iowa States 78-73 loss at Texas Tech on Saturday was certainly more shocking, as the Red Raiders came into contest with a 10-9 record and were seeking their first conference win. The defeat stopped a modest two-game win streak for the Cyclones, who fell to 14-4 on the season and 4-2 in the Big 12. ISU will try to begin a new run off success at home tonight, where it has gone 10-0 this season. Texas owns a 17-11 lead in the all-time series with Iowa State, but the Cyclones lead in games played in Ames, 8-4, which includes victories in each of the last three. Isaiah Taylor poured in 23 points and Johnathan Holmes tacked on 14 more, but Texas, as a team, struggled to hit its shots and wound up falling to Kansas by double digits. The Longhorns connected on only 40 percent of their field goal attempts, which included a dismal 3-of-18 performance from 3-point range. The Jayhawks didnt exactly torch the nets, hitting 43.5 percent of their total shots, including 6-of-18 from beyond the arc, although they did commit only three turnovers. Taylor is averaging 12.7 ppg to lead three players in double figures for the Longhorns, who put up 69.5 ppg while permitting only 57.3 ppg. In addition to a defensive effort that limits the opposition to 34.9 percent field goal efficiency, which encompasses a 30.2 percent showing from long distance, Texas is one of the top rebounding teams in the nation, coming into this contest with a +11.5 differential. Myles Turner and Holmes have a lot to do with that, as they pull down 6.8 and 6.5 rpg, respectively. Turnovers have plagued the Horns as they are guilty of 13.7 miscues per outing, while foes cough the ball up an average of 9.9 times per game. Iowa State got 20 points from Monte Morris, 12 from Matt Thomas and 10 from Georges Niang, but still came up short in Saturdays game at Texas Tech. The Cyclones were absolutely dreadful from 3-point range, going just 6-of-31, while the Red Raiders nailed 11 treys and claimed a 23-13 edge in points at the foul line. Naz Long, the teams second-leading scorer on the season, had a game hed rather forget as he went just 1-of-7 out on the perimeter in tallying five points before fouling out after only 17 minutes of action. The Cyclones boast five double-digit scorers, who just so happen to be their starters, with Niang pacing the group at 14.6 ppg. Long (12.4 ppg), Bryce Dejean-Jones (12.4 ppg, 5.9 rpg), Dustin Hogue (11.0 ppg, 5.1 rpg) and Morris (10.7 ppg, 5.6 apg) have all made significant contributions in one way or another, helping Iowa State light up the scoreboard for 79.7 ppg. The team is shooting 48.4 percent from the floor, while permitting the opposition 41.2 percent success, and 67.7 ppg as a result. 76ers Jerseys China . The Durban-based Sharks withstood a furious second-half fightback to beat the Queensland Reds 35-20 for a fourth straight win which gave them a five-point lead atop the championship table. The Hamilton-based Chiefs scored two late tries to beat the Cape Town-based Stormers 36-20 for their third win, after the Stormers rallied from 24-6 down to 24-20 with six minutes remaining. Philadelphia 76ers Gear . The Los Angeles Clippers showed them just how ugly that life could be. Jared Dudley scored a season-high 21 points, Chris Paul added 16 points and 17 assists, and the Clippers jumped all over the Bulls in Roses absence for a 121-82 victory Sunday. https://www.cheap76ers.com/. Marek Hamsik, who had earlier missed a penalty, headed Napoli in front in the 23rd minute and Pandev added a second goal five minutes from halftime. Alessandro Matri got Juventus back into the game just after the break but Pandev was on hand to score again in the 68th. Stitched 76ers Jerseys . TORONTO -- Jonas Valanciunas cherished the chance to think about nothing but basketball Wednesday night. The Raptors sophomore centre cast aside his off-court troubles to score a career-high 26 points and grab 12 rebounds in Torontos 125-114 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers -- less than three days after he was charged with drunk driving. "It has been a rough couple of days, but I had to find energy to come out and fight. I felt really good fan support -- thank you to them. I felt great, because everybody supported me," said Valanciunas, addressing the media for the first time since his arrest early Monday morning. "I say sorry, and (am) learning to be better. "Its been a really good two-and-a half hours (playing)," he added. Kyle Lowry topped Toronto (46-32) with 29 points in his first game back after missing three with a bruised kneecap. Patrick Patterson finished with 17 in the Raptors fourth straight victory and seventh in eight outings. DeMar DeRozan added 17 points before leaving the game with a minute to play with a nasty gash over his left eye that required three stitches. The swirling trouble surrounding Valanciunas didnt show in his game. He scored the Raptors first points of the night, then grabbed a rebound on the Sixers first shot, and scored on a thunderous dunk on a pass from DeRozan on Torontos next trip down the floor. "I expected it," Lowry said. "He was going to play like trash or he was going to play amazing. And he played amazing like we expected. "Its a tough situation for him to handle, but this is our sanctuary, basketball. We get a chance to be away from everything and basketball is our space, our secret spot. Thats where guys can release a lot of energy and intensity." Henry Sims scored 22 points, Michael Carter-Williams added 19, and Thaddeus Young finished with 16 for the Sixers (17-61). The Raptors are headed for the post-season for the first time in six years, and a victory on Friday versus the visiting New York Knicks will clinch the Atlantic Division. It will also tie their franchise record for wins of 47 -- set in 2000-01 and 2006-07. But the Raptors were coming off a tougher-than-expected 102-98 win over the last-place Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday, and the lowly Sixers -- who recently tied the league record for most consecutive defeats with 26 -- gave Toronto a decent game for much of the night. "These are the dog days, teams that dont have anything to play for, our guys see the computer, they see the standings and all the records. But we cant play that way," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. "I told them weve got to pick our defence up and not have the mental letdown." The Raptors led by only a point midway through the third quarter before taking a 98-89 advantage into the fourth in front of an Air Canada Centre crowd of 18,789. "I think for the most part we went out there and played a solid game, (the Raptors) are a good team," Young said. "They are a playoff contending team, third in the East, they have proven it day in and day out. They have a lot of key guys that can make shots and score the basketball." The Sixers trailed by just six points with 2:44 to play after Young drained a 17-foot fadeaway jumper. But Lowry proved once again how valuable he is down the stretch, sinking consecutive baskets to give the Raptors a 10-point lead with 1:52 to play, and the Sixers never threatened again. "Im just happy to be back out there with my teammates, honestly," Lowry said. "When you miss games you feel that you are letting the team down and its great to be back out there with the fellas." There were questions about Valanciunas playing Wednesday in the wake of his arrest, and Casey was asked pre-game about what message that sends. "We sent a message," Casey replied. "We sent a message that we dont condone it, were disappointed in him. By playing him, were not saying were condoning it." Valanciunas was arrested early Monday morning in Wasaga Beach, Ont., and charged with having more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. Police say they began investigating after a report that a vehicle went through a drive-thru with open beer bottles visible. DeRozan was pleased Valanciunas "came up big" against the Sixers. "I hope everybody leaves him alone," DeRozan said. "(His game) just shows you hes not letting everything else affect him, everything thats going on, or the situation that happened. Hes just going out there playing, he did what he did, its over with, he apologized to us, and understands whats at stake." Valanciunass first court appearance is scheduled for Collingwood on April 22. The 21-year-old is not required to attend so a lawyer will stand in for him. He could receive a suspension from the NBA, but that would be pending the results of a trial which would likely be during the off-season. Raptors starting forward Amir Johnson missed his fourth game with an ankle injury. Casey said the hardworking forward, who has long battled bad ankles, isnt 100 per cent, but "hes pretty close." "Probably if he had to go tonight he probably could go, but again, were trying to make sure, trying to get him ready for the next couple of weeks," Casey added. The Raptors led for all but a few seconds of the first quarter, and went up by nine points when Lowry converted a three-point play with 23 seconds left. A three-pointer by Elliot Williams cut Torontos advantage to 34-28 heading into the second. The Raptors continued to build on their lead, and Pattersons three-pointer with just under three minutes to go in the second put Toronto up 62-49. The Raptors went into the dressing room at halftime up 68-60. The Sixers opened the third with a 17-10 run, capped by Andersons three-pointer with 6:23 to go that cut the Raptors lead to just a point. The Raptors finished the quarter with a run of their own to give themselves a nine-point lead with a quarter to go. Todays Round of 16 match-up features Ottawa Senators forward Clarke MacArthur taking on Corey Perry of the Anaheim Ducks. MacArthur makes the cut on an unbelievable pass to create a goal for Kyle Turris. Breaking in two-on-three (yes, two-on-three, he was actually outnumbered!) MacArthur streaks down the right wing drawing coverage from perennial Norris Trophy candidate Ryan Suter. Looking to create a passing lane, MacArthur drags the puck between his legs and dishes a pass towards Turris in the slot. All three Wild defenders are caught leaning MacArthurs way and watch as the pass goes right to Turris tape and he squeaks a shot through Josh Harding. MacArthur took more than double Jamie Benns totals in the first round, taking nearly 70 per cent of the vote in their head-to-head match-up. LOUIS -- Mark Ellis knew that he might not see a whole lot of playing time when he signed a free-agent contract with the St. Louis Cardinals in December. "I figured theyd want me to come off the bench and Im fine doing that," he said. "I just want to be on a winning team." Ellis has gotten the best of both worlds. The 37-year-old infielder drove in two runs, including the go-ahead score with a bunt, and the Cardinals got a scoreless effort from their bullpen to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 Sunday. The Cardinals have won two in a row and seven of 10. Philadelphia has lost two straight after a season-high five-game winning streak. Ellis, who has received increased playing time due to injuries, broke a 3-all tie with a safely squeeze bunt in the fourth. He added an RBI single in the sixth. He is hitting .193 with 12 RBIs in 41 games. "We talked about it and the opportunity came up," he said of the bunt. "The ball up is an easier pitch to get that ball down. We were able to execute it." St. Louis manager Mike Matheny appreciates Ellis professional approach at the plate. "Two big at-bats," Matheny said. "Mark did a real nice job of getting that bunt down. He was thinking and really preparing ahead of time. Hes done a lot of good things in this game for a long time." Starter Carlos Martinez (1-3) allowed three runs over five innings. "I just focused on throwing strikes, not throwing the ball so hard," Martinez said. "As a starter, Im learning to use all of my pitches." Nick Greenwood, Sam Freeman, Pat Neshek and Trevor Rosenthal combined for four innings of two-hit scoreless relief. Rosenthal got his 22nd save in 25 chances. "They got some hits and I wasnt able to minimize the damage." Jon Jay got the inning going with an RBI single with the bases loaded. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Hornets owner Michael Jordan, a 14-time NBA All-Star, is pushing to bring the big game back to Charlotte. The Hornets, in conjunction with the Charlotte Sports Foundation, announced plans Tuesday to submit a bid to host the NBA All-Star Weekend in 2017 or 2018. A contingent of Hornets employees and city officials flew to New York Tuesday to deliver the bid to NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum and other league executives following a morning press conference in Charlotte. "This is a great time to be a Charlotte Hornets fan and a fan of NBA basketball here in the Carolinas," Hornets COO Fred Whitfield said Tuesday. "... This is a chance for us to host the greatest basketball players in the world on not a national, but a global stage." Whitfield estimates eight to 10 other cities will apply to host the game. Charlotte hosted the NBA All-Star Game in 1991 at the suburban Charlotte Coliseum, which has since been demolished. The Hornets now play in a downtown arena. Whitfield estimated Tuesday the arena, which opened in 2005, would need between $42 million and $43 million in upgrades. "The City Council at some point will receive the presentation on the results of the discussions that we have had," Whitfield said. "It has yet to be determined and it will be soon. Again, we want to make sure that our arena is very competitive with and against the rest of the region with high quality and high fan experience." Whitfield said those improvements to the arena will most likely be funded with hospitality tax revenues. The team has openly discussed in the past its desire to have the game return to Charlotte for quite some time. In April of 2013, NBA commissioner Adam Silver addressed the possibility of Charlotte hosting a future All-Star game, saying "I cant speak as to the year, but Im very excited about the prospect of the All-Star game returning to Charlotte. Its a terrific arena and one of our best basketball markets in terms of passion." Silver said this past March that no dramatic changes were needed to the arena. He said the scoreboard, suites and lighting were some of the things that needed to be upgraded to host the All-Star Weekend, which regularly features the games biggest stars and a host of celebrities. He estimates landing the All-Star game will have $100 million economic impact on Charlotte area based off the numbers from last years game in New Orleans. FRISCO, Texas -- Even without its offensive centrepiece, the Montreal Impacts offence seemed quite healthy in its MLS season opener. The defence, however, was another matter. Though they generating scoring chances in bunches -- even with 2013 leading scorer Marco Di Vaio watching from a box -- the Impact couldnt overcome its shaky defence in a 3-2 loss to FC Dallas on Saturday night at Toyota Stadium. "We gave up three goals. Its hard to win when you give up three goals," coach Frank Klopas said. "There were situations we could have avoided and handled better. "We had the shots on goal, we pushed the game, we created chances a but weve got to limit the goals or its going to be difficult. We scored two goals on the road and had more chances, so you figure youve got to walk away at least with points." Instead, Montreal has none, as Dallas speedy attackers consistently drove the ball deep and put the Impacts defenders in difficult positions. On two occasions those turned into fouls that led to FCD goals. Dallas Mauro Diaz blew past midfielder Sanna Nyassi on the right wing and cut inside toward the goal in the 23rd minute of a 1-1 game. Defender Jeb Brovsky caught him from behind, but Diaz went down on minimal contact in the box, giving Dallas a penalty kick that Blas Perez converted. "I felt like I could have sneezed harder and the guy would have fallen over," Brovsky said. "But thats part of the game. a The play should have stopped before that, and I had something to do with that. Im not happy about that, but you move on." Diaz scored on a curling 20-yard free kick in the opening minutes of the second half to give Dallas a 3-1 lead after Montreals Hernan Bernardello was called for a handball as FCD again threatened. The Impact made Dallas sweat despite the chilly conditions -- 5C with 24-kilometre per hour winds at kickkoff -- by continuing to press the attack.dddddddddddd It paid off in the 65th minute when Andrew Wenger, taking the lead forward role usually manned by Di Vaio, headed a pretty cross from Felipe past Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz to close the gap to a goal. But Seitz came up big in the final minutes to close the door for FCD. Di Vaios absence -- the result of a three-game suspension earned in an ugly shoving match during last seasons playoff loss to Houston -- didnt keep the Impact from putting together a dangerous attack. Montreal got off 15 shots, nine on goal and many at point-blank range, and put two of them in the net, both on textbook plays. "We probably could have had another two goals if we had just been sharper," Wenger said. "Marcos a fantastic player and a large part of our offence, but a lot of guys stepped up tonight and helped create opportunities. If we continue that the entire season, well be lethal." Montreal had a huge early chance when rookie Eric Miller, in his MLS debut fired toward a seemingly open net off a third-minute corner kick. FC Dallas defender Jair Benitez slipped into the goal and blocked the ball off the line, then helped Seitz stop Hassoun Camaras follow shot on the rebound. But seven minutes later, the Impact broke through for as 1-0 lead, as midfielder Justin Mapp weaved through three defender before threading a perfect cross to the foot of Nyassi, who tapped it into the corner of the net. It took Dallas only two minutes to tie it, with Fabian Castillo collecting a deflected ball in close and drilling it past keeper Troy Perkins. "It was a little bit of frustration, but you have to grow from that," Camara said. "When you allow three goals, youre never happy. We have to be more intelligent. "But at the same time, its very easy to correct that. We can do much better." ' ' '

On a day when the temperature soared to a sweltering 110 degrees and the show courts were covered by their retractable roofs, the 2009 champion Nadal put on a clinic in beating 17-year-old Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 at Rod Laver Arena. "Very happy to see the roof out there today," Nadal said. The reigning U.S. and French Open champion, who was a runner-up at Melbourne Park two years ago, will meet oft-injured, flashy former top-10 Frenchman Gael Monfils on Saturday. Nadal beat Monfils in a final at an Aussie Open tune-up in Doha just two weeks ago. The stifling weather on Day 4 resulted in the tournaments Extreme Heat Policy being put into effect, suspending action on the outside courts for a few hours. And there was also some rain, lightning and thunder on a wild- weather Thursday. The biggest shock of the first four days occurred early Friday morning in Melbourne when capable Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut toppled the former U.S. Open champion del Potro 4-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, with play wrapping up at 1:20 a.m. local time. Bautista Agut set himself up with a match point via ace, moving the score to 40-15 in the 12th game of the final set, and sent del Potro packing when the big Argentine netted one final forehand return after 3 hours, 50 minutes. The 6-foot-6 "Delpo" has never advanced beyond the quarterfinals in Melbourne and exited in the third round here last year. Meanwhile, a fourth-seeded Murray got past game Frenchman Vincent Millot 6-2, 6-2, 7-5 at Laver, where the roof was re-opened after the weather improved. Murray won the last 23 points of the match to come back from 1-5 down in the third set. "It was 6-5 when I went to serve for it, and someone shouted out, You won 19 in a row," Murray said. "I would say thats probably the most Id ever won in my career by far. I dont really know how I did it." The two-time major titlist and reigning Wimbledon champion lost to Novak Djokovic in last years marquee Aussie finale. Murrays third-round opponent will be Spanish left-hander Feliciano Lopez. The sixth-seeded former No. 1 Federer played under the roof at Hisense Arena and dismissed Slovenias Blaz Kavcic 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) for his 70th career win at the Aussie Open (70-8). The 17-time Grand Slam king is seeking his first Aussie title since 2010. Federer said he didnt mind thhe switch to Hisense after hed played 63 consecutive matches at Laver Arena since 2004.dddddddddddd. "It was nice ... its not really different to Rod Laver Arena really," Federer said. "Dimensions feel the same, the crowds were really nice, great atmosphere. I was happy playing there." The 32-year-old Federer will return to the court against Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili on Saturday. Tenth-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the 2008 runner-up to Djokovic, topped Brazilian qualifier Thomaz Bellucci 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, 6-4, while 11th- seeded Canadian slugger Milos Raonic downed Romanian veteran Victor Hanescu 7-6 (11-9), 6-4, 6-4. Tsonga will take on fellow Frenchman Gilles Simon, while Raonic will tangle with rising Bulgarian star Grigor Dimitrov in the round of 32. Sixteenth-seeded Japanese Kei Nishikori reached the third round by besting Serb Dusan Lajovic 6-1, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) prior to the suspension of play. Nishikoris next opponent will be American Donald Young, who upset 24th-seeded Italian Andreas Seppi 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. In other action involving seeds, a No. 18 Simon outlasted Croat Marin Cilic 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-2; the No. 22 Dimitrov defeated Taiwans Yen-Hsun Lu 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (13-11); a No. 25 Monfils sacked American Jack Sock 7-6 (7-2), 7-5, 6-2; a No. 26 Lopez erased German Michael Berrer 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4; No. 27 Frenchman Benoit Paire fought back to stop promising 18- year-old Nick Kyrgios, 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in the final result of the day; and Gabashvili took out No. 31 Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Paire-Kyrgios ended at 1:40 a.m. after 3 hours, 20 minutes. Paires third-round opponent will be the sweet-swinging Bautista Agut. Two other results saw Frances Stephane Robert get past Pole Michal Przysiezny 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1 and Slovak Martin Klizan beat Slovenian Blaz Rola 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2). History and Controversy in Week 2 The Ottawa Redblacks will go through a lot of firsts this year. On Thursday we witnessed the first game played by the new franchise, the first touchdown scored, (Chevon Walker, who will one day be the answer to a trivia question), and almost the first win. The Henry Burris-led expansion franchise got out to a 14-point first quarter lead, but couldnt hold on against a Blue Bomber team that is for real. More on the Bombers shortly, but it was fantastic to see and call a game involving Ottawa again. Football teams in our nations capital never had bad fans, just bad owners, and that is not the case this time around. The business model is sound, the league is strong, and football fans in Ottawa can trust that this team will be around for decades to come, and get emotionally invested. The players on this team are certainly "all in". They played hard, on the road, in a hostile environment, and almost got it done. It wont be long until we see some more firsts. Like the first game at home which is already sold out on July 18, and based on Thursdays game it wont be long until we see their first win. The Real Deal Now to the Bombers, and yes they are for real! On paper there still may be some who are suggesting other teams in the league are more talented, or maybe more experienced. However, this is a "what have you done for me lately?" business so experience only helps you if you are executing. Also, at the pro level every player is talented, and the difference between winning and losing is smaller than third and inches, so the culture you create for those talented players is what gives you the edge. The difference in Winnipeg this year is that head coach Michael OShea is a team first guy to the core. It oozes out of him when he talks and it is the main reason the Bombers are off to a 2-0 start. Yes, Drew Willy has looked excellent and they have found a tailback in Nic Grigsby but lots of teams have good QBs and tailbacks. OShea is teaching that the team is the priority and that all decisions must be made with the team considered before any personal agendas. It sounds simple but there are many examples of coaches that couldnt get the message across to their players. OShea has not been perfect. He kicked around the handling of veteran Korey Banks for longer than he had to, but his teams record is perfect so far, and that is what matters more than anything. Oh, and in the end the Bombers new head coach did eventually make the right decision when it came to Banks when he cut him loose. Banks wasnt happy with his role and that may have affected the culture in the locker room. By cutting Banks and letting him continue his career somewhere else, OShea made a team-first decision. Reaction to Willis hit on Collaros There are lots of differing opinions on the hit from Odell Willis of the Edmonton Eskimos on Zach Collaros of the Ticats. On one side there are those that argue the game is fast, physical and played by tough men who know what they signed up for, which is all true. It is an old school mentality and its not wrong. However, we live in a new world where player safety has become a priority in contact sports. Finding ways to make hockey and football safer for those who participate is not just dominating league meetings, but is also very important to the players associations. So what about the hit from Willis? First, it looked like the Esks defensive end did try and turn his head and avoid helmet-to-helmet contact. Second, it also looked like he tried to lead with his shoulder, therefore you can assume that there was no intent to target Collaros head. It is also true that if there is a penalty flag thrown every time helmets collide than there would be a penalty called on every play. Having said all of that, if in fact Willis did contact the head of Collaros - whether it was an accident or not - a penalty had to be called. Many times a defensive player gets pushed or trips into the quarterbacks legs accidentally, and that has to be called as well. The league will also review the hit and there could be supplementary discipline handed down in the form of a fine. It is no longer acceptable to say that it is a tough game and things happen at light speed so you have to let the guys play. Improving player safety is priority number one, and has become a legal issue. In fact you could take the discussion even further. The Players Associations in hockey and football are negotiating the player safety agenda into new CBA agreements, and yet dont self-govern when it comes to questionable hits in a game. How many times have we heard the CFLPA announce that they are appealing a fine by the league on a player who has made a questionable hit? It happens virtually every time a player is fined or suspended. Meanwhile the player that took the hit, in this case Zach Collaros, missed the rest of the game and could possibly miss more due to concussion issues. How many times has the Players Association announced a fine within their own organization to a player/member for a questionable hit? That to my knowledge has never happened. The players associations in contact sports have got to start imposing their own fines to players that cross the line, and show the league that improving player safety is not just the responsibility of the leagues head office, but the associations as well. It looks like the hit by Willis was an accident with no intent, but it was to the head of a quarterback, and that is a penalty and should also result in a fine. There is no provision in the rule book that says, "if the player hits a quarterback in the head by accident, or if he didnt mean to do it, then the hit becomes legal." The only way that Willis could avoid a fine here is if the league determines that Collaros didnt actually get hit in the head but it was the whiplash effect that caused his concussion symptoms, and of the TV angles shown so far that doesnt seem feasible. The tougher rules in contact sports these days are designed to change the behaviour of players to protect them from themselves. Those rules are not going away anytime soon, in fact they are getting tougher. We might as well all get used to it and drop the tough guy talk. If the league lets the Willis hit go without supplementary discipline, it will set a precedent for every other time a defensive player hits the head of a quarterback accidentally. There cant be any more grey area. If a defensive player hits the head of a QB, it is a penalty and a fine or suspension - thats the new reality of football. So much so, it is hard to see why there was even a debate on this hit in the first place. LOS ANGELES -- Gio Gonzalez picked a good time to earn his first victory for Washington in the second half, coming against a talented Dodgers lineup the Nationals could see in the post-season. Backed by four homers, including two from Denard Span, Gonzalez snapped his five-game skid with a 6-4 victory on Monday night in a matchup of division leaders. Gonzalez (7-9) allowed three runs and three hits in six-plus innings. The left-hander hadnt won since beating the Cubs on July 5. He had a 4.38 ERA in his previous nine games. He also doubled and scored on Anthony Rendons double off Brandon League in the seventh. "My velocity was where I wanted it to be," Gonzalez said. "I was attacking the strike zone, fastball, curveball, changeup, it was all working. Especially in a game like this with that lineup, its definitely not easy." The East-leading Nationals (78-58) own the NLs best record while the Dodgers (77-61) are atop the West and close behind in pursuit of the top seed, despite losing for the third time in four games. "We need to win games," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. Rafael Soriano pitched a shaky ninth to earn his 31st save. He yielded an RBI single to Juan Uribe, after the ball skipped by the mound and caromed off second base, allowing Yasiel Puig to score. The Dodgers then had runners on the corners with two outs but Joc Pederson took a called third strike in his major league debut. Roberto Hernandez (2-2) gave up five runs and five hits -- including a career-high four homers -- in 4 1-3 innings. The right-hander came in 2-0 against the Nationals, having allowed just an unearned run in 15 1-3 innings in two starts against them while pitching for Philadelphia before being acquired by the Dodgers last month. "It surprised me a lot," Hernandez said through a translator. "I didnt have command of my pitches from the first inning. It was just a matter of things not working for me. It wasnt that I had lost confidence." The Nationals ended August with 40 homers, second-best in the major leagues behind Baltimore. They picked up where they left off to start the final month of the regular season, with Jayson Werth and Asdrubal Cabrera adding solo shots. Spans second homer, a two-run shot on the first pitch he faced in the fifth, extendedd Washingtons lead to 5-2.dddddddddddd That chased Hernandez, who had walked Cabrera to start the inning before striking out Gonzalez. "I really cant explain it, other than home runs come in bulk and Ive been seeing the ball pretty good," Span said. Werth hit his 16th homer with two outs in the first. The Dodgers then got a two-out homer in the bottom half from Matt Kemp to take a 2-1 lead. Asdrubal Cabrera tied it at 2 with a leadoff drive in the third. One batter later, Span hit his first homer of the game. LONG SPAN It was Spans second career multihomer game. His first came on Sept. 13, 2008. His three RBIs were a season high. He is batting .360 in 43 games since the All-Star break. STREAKING KEMP The outfielder was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and the two-run homer, his 17th of the season. He has 10 RBIs in his last nine games, batting .361 since Aug. 22. His 174 career homers are three behind Mike Piazza for fourth on the Dodgers career list. TRAINERS ROOM Nationals: 1B Adam LaRoche left in the fifth after straining his lower back during an at-bat. He is day to day. ... OF Steven Souza Jr. (left shoulder) returned from rehab and was reinstated to the active roster. He was named International League MVP last week, having led the league in nearly every offensive category. Dodgers: RHP Chris Perez (bone spurs, right ankle) was reinstated from the 15-day DL after making five rehab appearances with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga. INF Carlos Triunfel was designated for assignment. CALL-UPS Nationals: With rosters expanding Monday, Washington recalled RHP Aaron Barrett, LHP Xavier Cedeno, C Sandy Leon, INF-OF Tyler Moore and RHP Blake Treinen from Triple-A Syracuse. Dodgers: Los Angeles recalled C Tim Federowicz, RHP Yimi Garcia, and INF-OF Alex Guerrero from Triple-A Albuquerque and selected the contract of OF Pederson from Albuquerque. Guerrero struck out as a pinch hitter and Garcia made his major league debut in the eighth, allowing one hit and striking out two in two scoreless innings. UP NEXT Nationals: RHP Doug Fister (12-5, 2.55 ERA) is 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA in his last three starts. Dodgers: LHP Clayton Kershaw (16-3, 1.73) starts. Among NL pitchers with at least 15 decisions, Kershaw and Fister (.706) rank first and second in winning percentage. ' ' '
NEW ORLEANS -- The Saints have re-signed free agent linebacker and special teams player Ramon Humber to a one-year contract. The announcement was made Friday by Mickey Loomis, the Saints executive vice-president and general manager. The 5-foot-11, 232-pound reserve linebacker originally signed with Indianapolis in 2009 as an undrafted free agent, playing in the Colts loss to New Orleans in Super Bowl XLIV. A season later, he signed with the Saints and has been with the team since, becoming a key special teams player and a steady reserve linebacker. Since 2010, he has 36 special teams tackles in the regular season and playoffs combined. The Saints finished the season with the leagues seventh-best punting unit, but allowed 25.2 yards per kick return, ranking 26th in the NFL. In 2013, playing in defensive co-ordinator Rob Ryans system, he saw action in all 16 games, starting three of them. He finished with a career-high 24. Fourteen of his tackles came in his three starts, including a four-tackle, half-sack performance at New England. Humber is the first Saints player who hit the free agent market to re-sign with the team. New Orleans watched as safety Malcolm Jenkins signed with Philadelphia. Kicker Shayne Graham and linebacker Keyunta Dawson were scheduled to become free agents before re-signing with the Saints in February. The Saints have been able to make a splash in free agency in spite of having little room to work with under the salary cap. The Saints began free agency less than $3 million under the salary cap. The day Jenkins agreed to play for Philadelphia, New Orleans brought in and signed Jairus Byrd, a three-time Pro Bowl safety from Buffalo. Byrd will make $1.3 million in base salary in 2014. Doug Sisk Jersey . CHAUNCEY BILLUPS (Pistons): Yes they got Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings in the off-season and Andre Drummond is a beast (teams are kicking themselves for passing on him - he rebounds and block shots every game - thats two more discernable and significant skills than most guys in his draft class), but dont for a second discount the impact of having a savvy veteran like Billups on your team. Michael Conforto Jersey . The 23-year-old Woods, Tiger Woods niece, closed with a 4-under 69 at Royal Pines to finish at 16-under 276. Lee also shot 69 in the event sanctioned by the European and Australian tours. Woods birdied the par-5 15th to open a two-stroke lead, hitting a wedge from about 120 yards to 4 feet. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Michael Vick missed some throws, had one picked off and even was sacked twice. It wasnt perfect, but it was good enough for Vick to declare himself ready for the regular season. Vick completed 15 of 23 passes for 184 yards, with a touchdown and an interception, and the Eagles rallied to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 31-24 in a preseason game Saturday night. He also ran for 53 yards, most of them coming after plays broke down. Just days after being named the starter, Vick showed solid command of new coach Chip Kellys up-tempo offence. "I think there were a lot of things that happened tonight that are very promising for our team," Vick said. "I ran the ball pretty well. I dont want to run that much, but I would if I have to. I did it and protected myself all night. If I can do it like that, then I can help this football team." Vick found Riley Cooper for a 9-yard score in the second quarter. "I thought Michael did a really good job of keeping plays alive at times, but there are other times where you have to cut your losses and get us back to the line of scrimmage and get the next snap off," Kelly said. "He did a good job of not forcing the football. He did a good job of making them honest and picked up some good yardage in running after they did a good job in coverage. "If you do that, then your quarterback can hurt you with his feet, and I think thats what Michael did tonight." Bryce Brown and Chris Polk ran for fourth-quarter touchdowns, helping the Eagles (2-1) overcome a 24-16 deficit. Nick Foles, who lost the starting job to Vick earlier in the week, completed 10 of 11 passes for 112 yards in the second half. "Thats what I expect out of him," Kelly said. "Hes an outstanding quarterback. I said that when we made the decision with Michael that I feel we have two quarterbacks that are quality NFL quarterbacks. We expect him to do that. Thats the type of player he is." LeSean McCoy ran five times for 9 yards. Brown got more work, finishing with 92 yards on 11 carries. Jacksonvilles Chad Henne, who lost the starting job to Blaine Gabbert earlier in the week but got the start because Gabbert has a broken thumb, completed 11 of 18 passes for 106 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception.dddddddddddd. Henne threw a 17-yard strike to Justin Blackmon in the first quarter and found Allen Reisner on an 8-yard score in the third. Jordan Todman, who is vying for a backup spot behind Maurice Jones-Drew, accounted for Jacksonvilles other touchdown when he ripped off a 63-yard run in the second. Both teams played up-tempo most of the night, often going without a huddle and trying to keep defences off balance and out of breath. "For the most part, the tempo is such a tremendous strain on the defence," Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said. "I thought we handled it really well. We had a good game plan to handle the tempo and it slowed down somewhat as the game has gone on." Jacksonville (0-3) had several positives. Receiver Cecil Shorts III, who missed the last three weeks with a left calf strain, made his preseason debut. He caught one pass for 20 yards and escaped without a setback. Rookie right tackle Luke Joeckel returned after missing last weeks preseason game because of a hip flexor and played well. And Todman showed the kind of burst the Jaguars have been lacking in the backfield. With Justin Forsett having missed three preseason games because of a sprained toe, Todman may have solidified his chances of making the 53-man roster. His big run was longer than anything the Jaguars have had in the last two years. "We always talk about whos fast," Jones-Drew said. "Todman right there showed he had a little speed, but well see later on whos the fastest at the end of the season." Jacksonville had one huge negative: Starting left guard Will Rackley, who missed all of last season because of an ankle injury, injured his left knee on the teams first offensive play. X-ray were negative, but an MRI was scheduled for Sunday. The Jaguars were ahead after three quarters, but failed to hold a lead for the second consecutive week. The Eagles outgained Jacksonville 452-346 and added 189 yards in kickoff and punt returns. Other positives for Philly: Linebacker Connor Barwin had an interception and a sack, and tight end Brent Celek caught four passes for 54 yards and nearly had a TD reception early. ' ' '

"Run him over," the New York Yankees manager said. "Bottom line: Run him over." Left fielder Matt Joyce threw out Drew in the fifth inning to preserve a one-run lead, and the Rays held on to beat the fading Yankees 4-3 Tuesday night. Just hours after Major League Baseball gave teams and umpires new guidelines on what catchers can do under this years experimental rule designed to avoid collisions, the latest instructions were put to a test. Drew was on second when Jacoby Ellsbury singled sharply to left, and third base coach Rob Thomson waved Drew around. Joyce threw home, and Hanigan gave Drew no lane to the plate as he awaited the throw, which arrived in plenty of time. Hanigan tagged the sliding runner, and Drew was called out by plate umpire Vic Carapazza. Girardi asked for a replay review, and the call was upheld after a delay of 1 minute, 19 seconds. Girardi discussed the ruling with first base umpire Larry Vanover, the crew chief, and Derek Jeter then lined into an inning-ending double play. "I dont know how Im supposed to catch that ball besides the way I caught it," Hanigan said. "As the throw came in, it came to the middle of the plate. If you call him safe right there, its ridiculous. If he hits me, Ive got no problem with that. I think the play was called correctly." The new rule, announced in February, says a catcher cant block the plate without the ball. The guidelines sent to teams Tuesday say the catchers positioning shouldnt change the call when the throw clearly arrives ahead of the runner. "I think on Sunday, he would have been safe," Girardi said, Crew chief Larry Vanover said he had not yet read the new guidelines, which Major League Baseball sent to umpires by email. He also said the replay umpire in the Manhattan control room gave a decision without explanation. Drew felt he had "nowhere to go." "The old-school way is to try to take him out," he said. "If I had to do it again, Id probably do it the other way." Rays manager Joe Maddon agreed that trying to knock over the catcher might have been the best option. "Joe had every reason to go out and argue," he said. "Conversely, if that play is overturned, its a travesty." Girardi, a former catcher, sounded exasperated. "If Im the baserunner, Im going to run him over there," he said. "Im going to lower my shoulder, and Im going to run him over." As for the rest of the game, Chris Archer (99-8) allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings for the win.dddddddddddd Pitching with old-fashioned stirrups that had horizontal stripes, he improved to 5-0 with a 1.93 ERA in six starts against the Yankees. Dominating with a 95 mph fastball, Archer retired his first nine batters before Ellsburys leadoff homer in the fourth. The Yankees scored their other runs in the fifth. "The hardest-hit ball that inning was the double play," Archer said. Jake McGee, Tampa Bays fourth pitcher, got three outs for his 17th save in 19 chances. McGee, who hasnt allowed a home run this year, retired Brian McCann on a flyout to the right-field warning track leading off the ninth and allowed Carlos Beltran to hit a drive about 10 feet to the foul side of the left field pole. Beltran then flied out, and Mark Teixeira hit a game-ending comebacker. New York began the night five games back for the second AL wild card with 21 remaining, and the loss dropped the Yankees to 3-4 on their next-to-last homestand. The game drew 31,188, the smallest crowd at new Yankee Stadium and New Yorks home low since Sept. 23, 2004, according to STATS. James Loneys solo homer in the second off Hiroki Kuroda (10-9) put the Rays ahead, and Tampa Bay opened a 3-0 lead in the third on RBI singles by Evan Longoria and Loney. Zobrists run-scoring single in the fourth chased Kuroda. Archer hit Chase Headley near his elbow with a pitch to start the fifth, and singles by Ichiro Suzuki and Drew loaded the bases. Chris Young, making his first big league start since Aug. 5 for the Mets, singled in two runs. Then came the play at the plate and the video review. "I was thinking in that moment," Archer said, "that that run had scored." The play stood, and so did the lead. TRAINERS ROOM Rays: SS Yunel Escobar returned to the starting lineup after missing Sundays game because of flu-like symptoms. Yankees: RHP Masahiro Tanaka threw 45 pitches during a simulated game and may need only a practice outing before rejoining the rotation. The Japanese star has been sidelined since July 8 by a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament and hopes to avoid ligament-replacement surgery that would sideline him for 2015. ... INF-OF Martin Prado (hamstring) and OF Brett Gardner (abdominal strain) were out of the lineup again. UP NEXT LHP Chris Capuano (2-3) starts for New York on Wednesday against Tampa Bay RHP Jake Odorizzi. STREAKING Loney is hitting .382 (21 for 55) with three homers and 12 RBIs in 13 games against the Yankees this season. He has a .348 career average against them with six homers and 29 RBIs in 40 games. ' ' '
TORONTO -- Former starting goalie Stefan Frei may finally get his chance to play next week for Toronto FC in place of the suspended Joe Bendik. Frei has not started an MLS game since Sept. 24, 2011, when Toronto was beaten 3-0 by Chivas USA. The 27-year-old Swiss-born keeper missed all of last season with an ankle and leg injury suffered in training. Then, having endured a long recuperation, he lost his job to Bendik after breaking his nose in the first game of the 2013 pre-season. Bendik, a fiery and dependable shot-stopper, has been one of the bright lights in Torontos 5-16-11 season. But he received a second yellow card at the end of Torontos 1-0 loss to Philadelphia last Saturday and will have to sit out a game in Chicago on Oct. 19. Toronto has a bye this weekend. Bendik was yellow-carded in the 86th minute for time-wasting as he prepared a goal kick. After the game ended, he got another yellow when he went to talk to the referee. Philadelphia scored on a 95th-minute free kick by Brazils Kleberson to win 1-0. "That was a weird one, I dont understand that," manager Ryan Nelsen said Tuesday of the ejection. "Mind-boggling how he got the first (card). And then I think the second (card) was more that he was asking about how it took them (Philadelphia) two minutes to celebrate the goal and then he (referee Armando Villarreal) called the game before the six minutes (stoppage time) was up. "So he was just asking why blow (the whistle) so quickly, which is a fair question. But generally when you ask those type of questions, you get those type of responses. Unfortunately we wont have Joe available." Villarreal handed out seven yellow cards and a straight red (to Phialdelphias Fabinho). Toronto has no shortage of goalies behind Bendik with Frei, Chris Konopka and Quillan Roberts. With 81 starts under his belt, the 28-year-old Frei has the most experience. But he is widely expected to be on his way out. His contract, worth a hefty US$200,000 this season, is expiring and the club is committed to Bendik, who more than likely will get a new deal to reward his No. 1 status. Bendik is making a bargain $46,500 this year. The team acquired Konopka in a deal with the Philadelphia Union last month. The six-foot-five keeper, who also makes $46,500, is expected to be Bendiks backup next season. In the case of fullback Richard Eckersley, another TFC player seen on his way out from the club due to a high salary cap hit, Nelsen has opted to see what else he has available in recent weeks. That has opened up a starting spot for Mark Bloom. Still his early take is that Frei will get the start. "Well have to see how we go for the next two weeks but Stefans been in that (backup) position all season so at the moment its his." Nelsens hand may be forced given that Konopka was recovering from an injury prior to joining Toronto. "Hes close but probably not close enough," said Nelsen. Many fans see Frei as a loyal servant of the club who has endured a dreadful spell of bad luck. Nelsen was asked at a recent breakfast with supporters whether he would consider giving Frei one final start in the season finale for "a proper sendoff." Nelsen was diplomatic at the time, without committing to anything. Its not the kind of gesture that appeals to the ultra-competitive Nelsen, however. The Toronto manager may well have opted for Kopoka had he been healthy. But Konopkas health also gives Nelsen a reason to win some points by starting Frei. At 19, Roberts is seen as one for the future and will likely be loaned out to a USL team next season to get seasoning. Bendiks suspension follows a high note, at least. He is up for save of the week for a stop on Philadelphias Michael Farfan. Kleberson, meanwhile is up for goal of the week. The bye week comes at a good time for Toronto given that midfielders Bobby Convey (ankle), Darel Russell and Alvaro Rey (both quads) both were injured in the Philadelphia game. "They should be all right by Chicago but well keep an eye on them," said Nelsen. Toronto wraps up its season Oct. 26 at home to the Montreal Impact. Yeezy Shoes . For the first time since that matchup, the two goalies face each other tonight as the Canucks host Thomas new team, the Florida Panthers. Going into Game 6, Luongo had an infamous rant in which he used the term to describe the praise he was showing Thomas in the media, but complained about not receiving the same from his Bruins goaltender. "I never did have any animosity toward him. I wasnt thinking about him. I was thinking about doing my job," Thomas told the Vancouver Sun on Monday. The series went seven games and Thomass 37 saves outdid Luongos 17 to a 4-0 championship clinching win at Rogers Arena. The Canucks are in danger of posting their longest losing streak in nearly five years, so now seems like a good time for a visit from the Panthers. The Canucks try to avoid a fifth straight defeat overall and just their second at home all-time against the Panthers. Vancouver has been held to a single goal during each game of its current 0-3-1 slide. That includes a setback in the first two of a six-game homestand, with the Canucks losing an overtime decision to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday prior to Sundays 2-1 loss to the Dallas Stars. Roberto Luongo had 21 saves and Henrik Sedin got the Canucks onto the board just over three minutes into the third period. Sedin, though, also had a potential game-tying goal on the power play waived off near the midway point of the second period when it was ruled twin brother Daniel Sedin made incidental contract with Dallas netminder Kari Lehtonen. Though Canucks head coach John Tortorella said afterwards that no one play costs a team a game, it was a sequence he would have liked to have been reviewed. "Its a big play in the game. I think we need to get the call right. If you can review that, I think you get the call right. But its unreviewable," said Tortorellla, who said he did not get an explanation of the call.dddddddddddd "All the crap we review, and they dont review an important thing like that. I just think that needs to change. Its the wrong call." That leaves the Canucks in danger of their longest losing streak since an 0-5-3 skid from Jan. 9-31, 2009. That makes this visit from the Panthers well timed. Florida has not won in Vancouver since its inaugural 1993-94 season, going 0-5-1 with five ties since. The Canucks are also 8-1-1 with a pair of ties in their previous 12 meetings with the Panthers overall, though Florida did snap a three-game series losing streak with a 2-1 win at home in the most recent encounter on Jan. 9, 2012. Luongo is 4-1-1 with a 1.79 goals against average in six career games versus the Panthers, who he played with for five seasons before getting traded to Vancouver ahead of the 2006-07 campaign. The Panthers are looking to get rolling under interim head coach Peter Horachek, having gone 2-3-0 since he replaced a fired Kevin Dineen on Nov. 8. Florida defeated the Colorado Avalanche 4-1 on Saturday, its second win in three games following an 0-5-4 slide and first on the road since its season- opener in Dallas on Oct. 3. The club had gone 0-8-1 on the road following that victory, but got a goal from Brad Boyes in the first period on Saturday, one from Brian Campbell and Tomas Kopecky in the second and a fourth from Jonathan Huberdeau in the final frame. Tim Thomas made 32 saves for his 200th career win and Tom Gilbert had three assists. "We didnt commit many turnovers and we kept the puck deep in their zone," Gilbert said. The Panthers will play the third of a five-game road trip tonight and could stay with Thomas in net. He has had success in his career versus the Canucks, going 3-1-0 with a 1.26 GAA in four regular-season meetings. He also helped the Boston Bruins knock off the Canucks in the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals, notching a pair of shutouts and winning the Conn Smythe Trophy. ' ' '
LONDON -- Eugenie Bouchards historic run at Wimbledon is over, but she thinks shes just getting started. Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic beat Bouchard 6-3, 6-0 on Saturday in the womens final to claim her second Wimbledon title, ending an impressive run by the 20-year-old Canadian at the All England Club. No Canadian had ever reached a Grand Slam singles final in the Open era before Bouchard. "It was a big moment walking out on to centre court for a final. I have that experience now, I know what it feels like," said Bouchard. "I hope I can walk out to many more finals. Thats the goal. "Im going to go back, work on my game, try to get better. You always need to get better." Bouchard, from Westmount, Que., is currently ranked 13th in the world, seven positions below Kvitova. She will rise to seventh when the WTA standings are updated after Wimbledon. She beat Germanys Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-final before topping Romanias Simona Halep 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the semis. The success at Wimbledon comes after a breakthrough season last year. Bouchard reached the semifinals at the Australian Open and French Open earlier this season. "I think its a tough road to try and become as good as I want to be, no matter what," said Bouchard. "Im not going to win every single time. I think this was a good experience for me -- my first Slam final -- so Im going to learn a lot from this match and hopefully use it to get much better." Bouchard was overwhelmed by Kvitova, who added a second to her first from 2011. Watching from the Royal Box was Britains Princess Eugenie, the royal for whom the Canadian was named. "Tough loss today at Wimbledon, but youre an inspiration (at)geniebouchard & Canada couldnt be more proud of you," said Prime Minister Stephen Harper in a tweet. Kvitova, her right thigh heavily wrapped as it was through the two-week tournament, quickly took charge of the match. She handcuffed Bouchards attacking game with a strong offence of her own, putting the Canadian under pressure on every service game with break point. "I have to give full credit to my opponent, she played unbelievable," said Bouchard. "I know I wont win every match but I want to be as good as I can be. This was a good experience and something I will learn from. I can hopefully use it to get better." Bouchard was broken in the third and seventh games to fall to a 5-2 deficit. She showed her own form by breaking back for 3-5 after Kvitova netted after chasing Bouchards cross-court shot. Despite Bouchards resistance, Kvitova wrapped up the first set in less than 30 minutes on a third set point. Kvitova picked up where she left off to start the second set with a break of Bouchard for 2-0. With the experienced Czech keeping up a lethally rapid pace, there was little time for Bouchard to react. Bouchard missed on a return at her feet to trail 4-0 as Kvitova took a stranglehold on the match. The Czech dished out a love game for 5-0 and finished off the title performance on her first match point with a deeply angled backhand cross-court winner after 55 minutes on court. It has been a strong tournament for other Canadians as well. Vancouvers Vasek Pospisil and American Jack Sock beat Bob and Mike Bryan of the United States in a thrilling 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory to win the mens doubles final Saturday. Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., made it to the mens singles semifinal before losing to seven-time champion Roger Federer of Switzerland in straight sets. The last Canadian to reach a mens final four at a major was Robert Powell at Wimbledon in 1908, according to Tennis Canada. Montreal native Greg Rusedski reached the U.S. Open final in 1997 but he was representing Great Britain at that time. Defending mixed doubles champions Daniel Nestor of Toronto and French partner Kristina Mladenovic will play a semifinal match against Max Mirnyi of Belarus and Hao-Ching Chan of Taiwan. Bouchard has done well at the All England Club in the past. She won the Wimbledon girls title in 2012, becoming the first Canadian to win a junior Grand Slam in singles. "I love coming back to Wimbledon, so thank you, guys," said Bouchard at centre court immediately after the match to a loud round of applause from the fans in attendance Saturday. Last year at Wimbledon, Bouchard won her second-round match against former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic in straight sets before she was eliminated in the third round by Carla Suarez Navarro. Kvitova defeated Bouchard in straight sets in their lone previous meeting last year at the Rogers Cup in Toronto. Bouchard said she will return to Montreal to decompress after the Wimbledon final. "Ill take some time off -- much deserved, Ive been playing a lot of tennis at a high level recently," said Bouchard. "Ill take time for the mind and body and then hit the practice court again and get excited for the second half of the season." Hammel pitched seven strong innings, Mike Olt hit a three-run home run and Nate Schierholtz drove in a pair of early runs to lead the Cubs to a 9-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. "With a doubt," he said. "Weve played a lot of close ballgames where we could have come out on the other end. Were a young team and well figure out how to win those ball games pretty soon." Hammel (3-1) allowed just one run and four hits without walking a batter in seven innings to lower his ERA to 2.60. "Very nice job," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. "He got some groundball double plays when he needed to. Made some pitches when he needed to. It was pretty efficient." Olt still is hitting below .200 for the season (.195), but has four homers and nine runs batted in despite not playing every day. The Cubs, whove won three of four to improve to 7-12, have won back-to-back games for the first time this season. They last won consecutive games on Sept. 9 and 10 of last season against the Cincinnati Reds. Their last consecutive home wins came on Sept. 4 and 6 against Miami and Milwaukee. Brandon McCarthy (0-4) lowered his ERA from 7.11 to 6.23 because only one of five runs allowed was earned. He yielded seven hits in five innings. Arizona has dropped four straight and has the worst record in the majors at 5-18. "It was a carbon copy of the game (Monday)," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "We made an error there, gave them life and then Brandon got behind in the count 3-1 and Olt hit a ball down over the plate, a pretty big pop into that wind. "We didnt mount any pressure again offensively so I dont know what to tell ya," he said. In the third inning, Luis Valbuena stroked a one-outt double to left-centre field and then scored two batters later on a two-out single by Schierholtz.dddddddddddd In the fifth, Schierholtz drove in Valbuena again, this time on a sacrifice fly to right field, for a 2-0 lead. Valbuena led off the inning with a single, went to second on a groundout and then reached third as Arizona second baseman Martin Prado dropped Anthony Rizzos grounder for an error. The Cubs took advantage. Given the extra out, Starlin Castro singled to put two runners on and Olt followed with a homer into the right field bleachers for a 5-0 lead. "I think it probably helped me," Olt said of the wind. "I wasnt trying to hit a home run. I was just trying to put the ball in play and hit it hard." Arizona finally got on the board against Hammel in the sixth when Tuffy Gosewisch led off with a homer. The Cubs then broke things open with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, while the Diamondbacks got one back in the ninth. NOTES: Wednesday is the 100th anniversary of the first game at Wrigley Field, which then was known as Weeghman Park, between the Chicago Federals and Kansas City Packers of the Federal League. HAMILTON, Ont. -- The Hamilton Bulldogs are focused on keeping their composure period by period as their season winds down. Christian Thomass second-period goal stood as the winner and Dustin Tokarski made 27 saves as the Bulldogs defeated the Abbotsford Heat 2-1 on Wednesday in the American Hockey League. "Tonight we stayed composed, even when we thought we had another goal in the third period," said Hamilton head coach Sylvain Lefebvre. "We kept working, and we have to get used to playing those tight hockey games. "Thats what gets you to the playoffs, and thats what helps you win hockey games when you get there." A post-season berth is far from Hamiltons grasp, however. The Bulldogs remain 10 points back of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, with just 14 games to play. Mike Blunden and Gabriel Dumont also scored for Hamilton (27-30-5). Chris Breen had the lone goal for the Heat (34-23-7), who have lost 10 of their last 11 games. Aaron Dell stopped 36 shots. Michael Bournival made his debut for the Bulldogs on Wednesday, having been sent to the team by the Montreal Canadiens a day earlier on a conditioning assignment. After playing 50 games for Montreal in his rookie season, the forward suffered a concussion in a Feb. 6 game against the Vancouver Canucks, and was cleared for contact on March 14. His insertion in the Bulldogs lineup provided a much-needed boost to the top line, and the combination of Bournival, Sven Andrighetto and Thomas used its speed to great effect against the Heat in the first period. Thomas was very pleased with the lines first game together, and felt comfortable playing alongside Bournival, who he came across several times at the junior level. "Its always tough playing with a new guy, but (Bournival) fits in really well and brings a lot of speed," he said. "Ive known him for a long time, and grew up playing with him at world junior camps. "Ive seen him quite a bit, and obviously he has some NHL experience. But he plays a hard game and that always helps your line." Hamilton was getting the best of play, but it was Abbotsford that opened the scoring at 8:56. Ex-Bulldog Corey Locke controlled the puck below Hamiltons goal-line, and connected with the open Breen as he glided into the high slot. The defenceman released a mid-range wrist shot that Tokarski only partially connected with, and the puck trickled over the goal-line. It was Breens first goal of the season. Pressure did eventually pay off for Hamilton, as Blunden stole the puck from Abbotsford defender Shane OBrien to create an equalizing goal. The winger moved in alone on Dell and shifted from backhand to forehand before lofting a shot over the far shoulder of the goaltender at 17:55. Blunden nearly scored his second of the game with 10 minutes to play in the second period, as Dell kicked a Morgan Ellis slap shot from the point out to his right and the winger narrowly missed a tap in attempt at the post. Thomas did better with Hamiltons next scoring chance, as the Bulldogs took the lead at 12:42. After a period and a half of successful forechecking, Hamiltons top line got on the board when Bournival fought off a defender along the right wing and fired a low wrist shot that Dell knocked into the path of Thomas to his right. The rookie winger did the rest, slotting a quick shot past the sprawling goaltender from close range. Consecutive penalties to Nathan Beaulieu posed a late challenge for the Bulldogs, but their penalty killing unit responded well to hold the lead through 40 minutes of play. Hamilton entered play on Wednesday with an 18-0-1 record when leading after two periods. Tokarski did his part to preserve the lead, snatching a Max Reinhart wrist shot out of the air from point blank range with just under six minutes to play. His save was rewarded at the other end of the ice, as Dumont was awarded a penalty shot after being tripped with a clear path to the net, and made good on the chance. Slowly skating toward Dell, Dumont stopped abruptly and shifted to his forehand to tuck the puck in behind him at 16:01 of the third period. Neither team made use of their power plays on Wednesday, as Hamilton went 0 for 2 while Abbotsford was 0 for 3. Stitched Jerseys For Sale . San Jose (2-3-4) stretched its unbeaten streak at home to three matches despite losing winger Shea Salinas to a straight red card after a studs-up tackle on Dallas defender Zach Loyd just before halftime. FC Dallas (5-5-1) slid to its fourth straight loss despite a stinging 20-yard free-kick goal by Michel in the 76th minute. Cato burst in behind the Dallas defence to give San Jose a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute, set free by a long pass forward by goalkeepeer Jon Busch and a redirecting header from centre back Clarence Goodson.dddddddddddd It was the first career assist for Busch, a 14-year MLS veteran. San Jose doubled its lead off an own goal by Dallas substitute David Texeira in the 73rd minute, providing enough of a cushion to withstand Michels strike. The Earthquakes held on in the second half. Victor Ulloa banged a shot off the post in the 57th minute, and Busch scrambled across his goalmouth to deliver a body block on Blas Perezs rebound try. Matt Hedges, Fabian Castillo and rookie Tesho Akindele all missed wide for Dallas in the final 11 minutes of regulation. ' ' '
NEW YORK -- Craig Kimbrel hardly ever needs help with the ninth inning. He got some Saturday night. Jordan Walden nailed down the final out with the bases loaded after Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez pulled his star closer following a shaky performance in a 7-5 win over the New York Mets. Sidelined recently by shoulder discomfort, Kimbrel threw 24 pitches during his first outing in a week. The Braves didnt want him to go any longer, and Gonzalez thought the reliever was rusty. "The good thing is that we got him on the mound and got him pitching and well go from there," Gonzalez said, adding that Kimbrel was pain-free. "He was fine. He was good. Thats a good, positive sign." Freddie Freeman had three hits and hustled his way through a weird play that brought the Braves two runs when the Mets were unable to challenge a costly incorrect call. Ervin Santana pitched seven crisp innings for his second win over New York in three starts with Atlanta. Justin Upton hit a three-run homer in the ninth to make it 7-3, and that became crucial when the Mets rallied against Kimbrel. They scored twice off the hard-throwing right-hander, who loaded the bases with a two-out walk to Lucas Duda. Thats when Gonzalez went to the mound and lifted Kimbrel, who wasnt happy about it. "Thats what makes him good," Gonzalez said. "At that point of the game he dont care about his arm, he dont care about anything, but he wants to finish that inning." Kimbrel waited an extra moment or two before reluctantly handing over the ball. "Im a competitor and anytime you get taken out, obviously you get upset about it and I did," said Kimbrel, who apologized to Gonzalez after the game. "Thats disrespectful to him, to the team and its just not the type of person I am and I felt awful about it." Walden retired Travis dArnaud on a grounder to secure his first save of the season and Atlantas seventh victory in eight games. Gold Glove shortstop Andrelton Simmons was shaded toward the hole and made a strong throw to get dArnaud. "I was ready. Im always ready," Walden said. Santana (2-0) allowed one run and struck out seven, giving the Braves their latest outstanding start. Despite several significant injuries in spring training, Atlantas rotation entered with a 1.47 ERA -- best in the majors by nearly a full run. David Wright, Daniel Murphy and Chris Young all had three hits for the Mets, held to one by Aaron Harang and two relievers in the series opener Friday night. Bartolo Colon (1-3) gave up three runs in seven innings for New York. Young cut it to 4-2 with an RBI single in the eighth off David Carpenter. Duda made a bid for a three-run homer with a long drive that was caught on the warning track in right field. "I thought it was a home run," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "I thought he hit that ball good." A single by dArnaud brought the Mets within one, but Carpenter ended the inning by retiring Ruben Tejada on an easy grounder with runners at the corners. Uptons fifth homer came off Jose Valverde and followed an intentional walk to Freeman. Atlanta was trailing 1-0 with two outs in the third when Freeman fisted a soft bouncer between the mound and home plate. Colon appeared to be in no particular rush to pick it up -- and then he threw wildly past first base as Freeman hustled down the line. Two runners scored on Colons error, and Freeman was credited with an infield single. But replays showed the ball hit Freemans front foot before bounding onto the grass, so it should have been ruled foul. Collins could not challenge the call because only batted balls that "first land at or beyond the set positions of the first or third base umpire" are subject to video review for fair or foul, according to baseballs replay rules. Since the ball rolled right in front of the plate, the Mets had no recourse. "Nobody saw it and you cant challenge it," Collins said. "You have to understand that this is a whole work in progress." Freeman doubled home a run in the fifth, and Upton scored on Daisuke Matsuzakas wild pitch in the eighth to make it 4-1. The 40-year-old midfielder was put in charge on Tuesday when David Moyes reign ended after 10 months with the defending champions in seventh place in the English Premier League. Speaking publicly for the first time since his temporary appointment, Giggs provided an insight into what he has told the squad about Saturdays match against Norwich at Old Trafford. "I trust you and I know what youre capable of, and go out there and show it on Saturday, and give the fans something to shout about," Giggs said on Friday. "Entertain them, score goals, make tackles, play with speed, play with tempo." Giggs is expected to manage the team for only the remaining four matches of the season before a more experienced successor to Moyes is appointed. "It has been a difficult week for the club and its been a bit of a whirlwind week for me but one Ive enjoyed," Giggs said. "It has been different, chaotic, and Ive been getting a little taste as its my fourth day in the job." Giggs came through the youth ranks at Old Trafford and was part of the famed "Class of 92" youth team that helped contribute to so much of the clubs success under Alex Ferguson, who retired last year after more than 26 years in charge. "Ive had to take a bit of stick (ffrom the players)," Giggs said.dddddddddddd "Things like, Where are you going to park? What do we call you? "The players have been great and the reaction in training has been sharp. Ive just tried to make things relaxed and for everyone to enjoy themselves ... lets have a good end to what has been a frustrating and disappointing season." The clubs most decorated player, who has made 962 appearances, is still in the squad and could pick himself to play against Norwich. "Ive just given myself a five-year contract," Giggs joked. "I havent done much this week but am still involved as a player as well." Giggs is being assisted by former teammates Phil Neville, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes as he tries to stabilize a team in turmoil. "Its the proudest moment of my life," Giggs said. "Ive supported Manchester United all my life. Its been the biggest part of my life since I was 14, when I signed schoolboy forms. Im proud, happy, a little bit nervous but just like I am as a player, I cant wait for the game on Saturday." Moyes can now prepare for the future after finally agreeing on his severance package with United on Friday. "Terms of settlement have been agreed between the club and David Moyes in respect of the termination of his employment," the League Managers Association said in a statement. "A settlement agreement is in the process of being finalized." ' ' '
Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Dear Kerry, On Thursday night in the Chicago/Detroit game, linesman Steve Barton was forced to leave the game due to an injury. I´ve got two questions regarding this situation: 1. Are there any common rules how referees and linesmen split their responsibilities after such a situation happened?2. How many referees (linesmen) is "enough" to finish the game? Is it possible to finish the game with only one referee (linesman) left? (e.g. hypothetically three referees are forced to leave the game) Looking forward to your answers. With best wishes from Slovakia,Peter Bartisek Hi Peter: Cmon Ref is pleased to receive your question from the beautiful country of Slovakia and with the International Games of the Winter Olympics soon to begin. Thank you for your concern for linesman Steve Barton when he was forced to leave the game in Chicago with an injury. Barts is an outstanding linesman and truly one of the great guys on staff. It appears he may have sustained a slight concussion from a hit to the head sustained on Monday night in Phoenix. We wish Steve a full and speedy recovery. Rule 32.6 provides general provisions when a linesman is unable to continue; "Should a Linesman appointed be unable to act at the last minute or through sickness or accident be unable to finish the game, the Referees shall have the power to appoint another in his stead, if they deem it necessary, or if required to do so by the Manager or Coach of either of the competing teams. If no replacement Linesman is available, the two Referees will assist the remaining Linesman with his duties while still retaining their ability to assess penalties when deemed appropriate." In the practical application the two Referees assist the remaining linesman with his duties. The Linesman conducts all end zone face-offs and the lead referee (backing up in advance of the play) picks up the first offside call at the lead blue line and also will make the call on the new hybrid icing rule either by waving the play good or blowing his whistle when he determines icing has been committed. The "Junior" referee conducts neutral zone face-offs. He would most likely assist the Linesman in breaking up fights as well; although it might be agreed upon that the larger of the two referees would perform this physical duty! In the event that three officials were forced to leave the game or were perhaps unable to arrive at the rink due to weather or unforeseen circumstance the authority to appoint replacements is spelled out in rule 31.11. "If, owing to illness or accident, one of the Referees is unable to continue to officiate, the remaining Referee shall perform the duties of the ill or injured Referee during the balance of the game. In the event that a member of the Leagues Hockey Operations or Officiating departments is in attendance at a game where a spare official is present, he shall have the authority to substitute the injured Referee with a spare. If through misadventure or sickness, he Referees and Linesmen appointed are prevented from appearing, the League will make every attempt to find suitable replacement officials, otherwise, the Managers or Coaches of the two Clubs shall agree on Referee(s) and Linesman(men). If they are unable to agree, they shall appoint a player from each side who shall act as Referee and Linesman; the player of the home Club acting as Referee and the player of the visiting Club as linesman." Members of the off-ice crew are typically high level amateur or minor professional hockey officials and could be appointed to act as substitute referees and linesmen if necessary. We have seen situations where this has happened in the past. Peter in Slovakia and all the rest of your fans wish you a speedy recovery Barts. Cheap Jerseys For Sale .
